Cloud Pet Putting Children In Danger. The makers of the popular children’s toy, Cloud Pet made no provision for any type of on line security . for their server which exposed over 800,000 households and 2,000,000 recorded messages to hackers. No wonder that Ryn “The Guardian” Melberg expresses shock and askes pointedly ‘what the hell’ on her podcast this week as the topic of children’s’ on line vulnerability and the popular toy are the subject of her podcast entitled, “The Guardian”. The Guardian Podcast is the only one of its type that covers issues of corporate governance, Agile, Scrum, SAfe and other business issues. Who and what is Cloud Pet? Cloud Pet Putting Children In Danger

On the surface, the Cloud Pets are really nice, if not downright charming, plush toys that are unique. Cloud Pets are like answering machines for children in that they can record phone messages from parents, grandparents and others who are located remotely from the child who owns the toy. Marketed by the company as a ‘message you can hug’ the toy can both send and receive messages from anywhere. Not surprisingly, these are promoted heavily to people in the military who are deployed overseas or even on domestic bases that are not near family members. “They are really sweet and clever toys,” Melberg told her audien None.”

How Cloud Pet Got Hacked Cloud Pet Putting Children In Danger

According to Melberg, the site was found by a hacker who was perusing the Internet for vulnerable servers, which are those that have no security set up. The hacker found Cloud Pet, but rather than harvest and sell the information this hacker tried to shame the company by posting information about the vulnerability on line. Lest anyone think this could not possibly get worse, it did. “Another hacker wanted to see if he could hack the toy itself,” Melberg said. “He did and  because the blue tooth app inside the pet does not have a synchronization device, which makes it an unsecured blue tooth device that anyone can access.” Melberg said that when she learned that her heart was in her throat and for good reason. “Hackers can talk to children and listen to anything going on in a household within range of the cloud pet. It’s like leaving the front door, back door and all the windows of your home open with a sign that says please rob me.”

How To Protect Children On Line

Melberg has very strict rules for what goes on line inside her household and suggests the same thing for everyone else. “Be very spare in what you put on line about your children,” Melberg warned. “Do not post birthdays, school locations, full names, addresses, phone numbers, emails addresses or even photos of your children on line if you want to safeguard their identity and privacy.”

Melberg speaks to this topic from experience as when she was eleven years old, her identity was stolen. “I did not find out my identity was stolen until years later when I applied for a student loan and found that the person who stole my identity used it to make loans that of course were defaulted on,” she recounts to her audience. “This is an unforced error,” she said. “There are few laws or regulations to protect children on line in the USA, but parents need to make it their business to protect their kids on line just like they do in other places.”
